Rug Sizes & Placement Guide

The Golden Rule

A rug should anchor your furniture rather than float beneath a coffee table.

Whenever possible, the front legs of sofas and chairs should sit on the rug. Larger rooms can accommodate all furniture legs on the rug for a more luxurious, cohesive look. Interior designers consistently recommend sizing up rather than choosing a rug that feels too small.

The Chair Test

Your rug should extend beyond the dining table far enough that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.

As a general guideline, allow approximately 60cm of rug beyond each side of the table. This creates a balanced look while preventing chairs from catching on the rug edge.

Create Warmth Underfoot

A bedroom rug should extend beyond the bed to provide softness and visual balance. Ideally, the rug should project approximately 45–60cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed.

Queen Bed
Recommended Rug: 240 x 340 cm

King Bed
Recommended Rug: 300 x 400 cm

Smaller Bedrooms
Consider placing a rug two-thirds under the bed or using bedside runners for a lighter look

Guide The Eye

Runner rugs bring warmth, texture, and definition to passageways.

For the best visual balance:

✔ Leave 10–15cm of floor visible on each side
✔ Centre the runner within the hallway
✔ Avoid rugs that span wall-to-wall

Define Your Workspace

A rug helps create a dedicated work zone and softens hard flooring.

Choose a rug large enough for your desk chair to move freely while remaining on the rug.
